Dream Stream Still Holding Some Nice Trout

There are still some healthy trout holding in the Dream Stream's meanders. San Juan Worms, Caddis emergers and black beauty midges are taking fish.

Solitude in Upper Cheesman Canyon

Fly Fishing for me has always been about finding a little bit of solitude. If I don't find quiet solitude the experience is significantly different. I can catch hundreds of fish but if I do not find some reverent solitude the experience falls short. My soul remains untouched and is not satisfied.

Finding solitude on our river is becoming more and more difficult. It seems everyone wants to fly fish and catch fish. What can we do? What can I do? What can I say? To speak on the issue and any possible solution does not solve the issue.

Therefore, I will remain quiet, and hike myself and a client or two, farther and farther in the upper reaches of canyons and meadow streams.

Deckers: Trout Like the Heavy Waters.

The trout at Decker's South Platte River have been feeding in the higher flows. Many food items are available and so they are not quite so selective feeding on a specific "bug."  We have been catching fish on San Juan worms, various midges, crane fly larva, along with numerous mayfly nymph and emergers.  PMD's, midges, and BWO's are evidently emerging, but below the surface a smorgasbord of food is being made available by the heavier flows. It is a great time to try a variety of fly patterns and not get hung up on the details of trying to match the hatch.

The higher flows also allow the bigger fish to come out of hiding and roam around. They are tough to land however. We have been playing the "Chase them down stream" game. Sometimes they stay on the line; other times not.
